The BC Economic Development Association and BC Hydro's BC Economic Development Awards recognizes the province's best economic development programs, partnerships and marketing materials. These prestigious awards honor organizations and/or individuals for their efforts in creating positive change in urban, suburban, and rural communities.

 

Winners will be announced at the 2014 BC Economic Summit, which will be held June 8th to 11th in Richmond, BC. 

 

Final submission deadline is April 25, 2014.

Summit Speaker Spotlight: Stan Phelps

Stan Phelps is the Founder and Chief Measurement Officer of 9 INCH marketing, an organization that inspires leaders to think differently about their most important stakeholders. Helping brands win the hearts of employees and customers through a groundbreaking concept
called The Goldfish Rule. 

Stan is the author of the Amazon Best-Seller, What's Your Purple Goldfish - 12 Ways to Win Customers and Influence Word of Mouth. The book is based on the Purple Goldfish Project, a crowd sourcing effort that collected over a thousand examples of signature added value. The book provides 12 practical strategies for winning the hearts of customers and influencing positive word of mouth. 

He is also the author of What's Your Green Goldfish - Beyond Dollars: 15 Ways to Drive Employee Engagement and Reinforce Culture. Green Goldfish examines the importance of employee engagement. The book showcases 15 ways to increase engagement, finding signature ways to reinforce the culture of the organization. 

Since 2008, Stan's insights have been featured on leading sites such as Customer Think,Business2Community, MENG Blend, and Switch & Shift. 

Prior to founding 9 INCH, Stan held leadership positions at IMG, adidas, and the PGA of America. He also spent 7+ years as Chief Solutions Officer at Synergy, an award winning experiential marketing agency. At Synergy, Stan helped create larger than life brand experiences for brands such as KFC, M&M's, Starbucks and organizations such as NASCAR, MLS, and the USTA. These programs, although successful, weren't scalable or sustainable.
Stan received a B.S. in Marketing and Human Resources from Marist College, a J.D./M.B.A. from Villanova University and a certificate for Achieving Breakthrough Service from Harvard Business School. He has worked as an adjunct professor of marketing at NYU and Manhattanville College. He serves on the Advisory Board for Special Spectators and as a member of the marketing committee for the Ronald McDonald House of Durham. Stan lives in Cary, NC with his wife Jennifer, their two boys Thomas & James.

Coastal Forest Industry Workforce Initiative Labour Market Information Report

The overriding challenge facing the forest industry is replacing an aging workforce, as the need to replace retiring workers, and others who depart voluntarily, is significant and ongoing over the next 10 years. This challenge is made more difficult given the challenges attracting and recruiting youth to an industry that has been in decline for a number of years. Public perceptions of the industry are such that youth are not considering job or career opportunities in the industry, as the work is perceived as seasonal and uncertain, often in remote locations. The shift towards a "contract" workforce (versus an employed workforce) in forestry and logging over past several years has contributed to this perception.
