A short promotional film of the Cowichan Region focusing on lifestyle, business and leisure activities. Similar initiatives are easily adaptable for other communities. These types of films can be well within financial budgets once you get community support.

Economic Development Cowichan was recognized as an award winner for this initiative at the 2013 BC Economic Summit.

Who better to extol the benefits of doing business in Kamloops than those entrepreneurs who have found success actually doing business in the city? This was the thinking behind the Venture Kamloops Entrepreneur Campaign.
Strategically, it was determined that an overall marketing campaign with a consistent look tied to their brand throughout all pieces was imperative. Initially, interviews were conducted with selected entrepreneurs who were engaged in the business community, each with varying levels of success in various sectors, to share their stories of why they chose Kamloops to start, relocate or expand their business.
We have officially been approved to change our name to the British Columbia Economic Development Association (BCEDA). Our name change will better align with other Canadian economic development associations.  Over the coming months you will begin to notice the transition to BCEDA.

All too often, economic development organizations choose greenfield projects and bypass the opportunities associated with brownfield redevelopments.  In many cases, however, brownfield redevelopment and historic preservation can be the most cost effective option and can also produce the best results. This article focuses on the successful efforts in Leavenworth, Kansas,  to redevelop a deteriorating downtown industrial property on a city block in the central business district. It offers lessons learned and tips for success for other communities considering the prospect of brownfield redevelopment.

Effective, October 4, BCEDA is suspending its support for OpportunitiesBC.  BCEDA recommended this initiative to assist communities in efforts to attract investment for local opportunities.  From the spring of 2012 to September 2012, BCEDA worked hard with communities throughout the Province to get opportunities loaded on the site - in fact we are proud that we were able to populate the site with five times the amount of opportunities than the original target.  We then assisted the Province in responding to inquiries for opportunities where no EDO was present or able to be part of the program and then helped to assign responsibilities to new EDO's and Provincial employees.

We are confident that Darby Cameron, will continue to do a great job in dealing with any issues that may arise and thank the Province for allowing us to be involved and wish them well with the initiative going forward.

Bowen Island currently does not issue business licenses.  They are looking at this option and are wondering if they could get some sample business license applications to review.  They are particularly interested in ones that have recently been modified or implemented and the types of information that is gathered.  If you could also include what program you are using to manage the information it would be appreciated.  Please email Shanna Stevenson SStevenson@bimbc.ca and copy Dale Wheeldon (wheeldon@edabc.com).

The Premier will be leading a Jobs and Trade Mission to China, Korea and Japan to deepen British Columbia's relationship with those key Asian markets. The 13-day mission will take place from November 21 - December 3, 2013.   The Premier's office has asked for our assistance in helping them identify potential communities and/or companies who may want to participate.

Economic Developers play a key role in shaping the future economy of British Columbia, and the Premier would welcome your participation to showcase your community, your business and to advance provincial interests internationally.  If you have any issues or upcoming successes that you wish to highlight during the mission, they would encourage you to share them.

In each market, the mission will strengthen bilateral relations with government partners; promote British Columbia's competitive advantages during corporate meetings with key investors in priority sectors as identified in the BC Jobs Plan; and capitalize on British Columbia's cultural bridge across the Pacific with networking events built around British Columbia's many familial, economic and educational connections to Asia.

As a participant you will be invited to participate in evening networking events with investors and BC Trade and Investment staff.  If you have interest in participating please complete the attached form and send it to: TradeMission2013@gov.bc.ca by October 25, 2013.

Please note that participating as a member in the delegations will mean you will be responsible for arranging your own travel and accommodation along with obtaining your own travel visas. Participants travel at their own risk and should be covered by adequate insurance.
