Economic Development Specialist - City of Surrey

The City of Surrey is looking for an entrepreneurial-minded champion to join the Economic Development Team and take the City’s business communities to the next level. The Economic Development Specialist will create and execute initiatives to position Surrey as the premier location in Western Canada for business investment and innovation. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the City’s business outreach program, sector development, building strong business communities, and providing strategic economic development support.
 
Reporting to the Manager of Economic Development, responsibilities include:
  • Leading the execution of the City’s business outreach program and maintaining strong relationships with local businesses
  • Connecting local businesses to government services and programs that help them to grow
  • Measuring the impact of and supporting continuous program improvement
  • Supporting the development of new business vibrancy programs across the City
  • Promoting local investment opportunities, helping identify commercial and industrial land opportunities, and supporting investor decision-making in Surrey
  • Facilitating new private sector partnerships and investment opportunities throughout the community
  • Researching, developing, and implementing innovative sector-related programs and initiatives to attract, retain, and grow businesses
  • Supporting the execution of sector development programming and other initiatives as required
  • Analysing and evaluating economic and business development opportunities and identifying strategies to develop these opportunities
  • Developing and expanding relationships with potential investors and businesses looking to relocate to Surrey
  • Assisting in writing grants and developing proposals to advance economic development strategic initiatives
 
The successful candidate will have a strong business acumen and be able to manage a complex workload while thriving in a fast-paced environment. This role requires a professional, enthusiastic, team player with the desire to take responsibility for his/her contributions. In addition, the Economic Development Specialist will have:
  • An analytical mind and a keen eye for details
  • High level of proficiency with computer programs such as MS Office
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong research/analytical/reporting skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines and produce quality deliverables
 
This role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce or Business Administration, supplemented by a minimum of five years of current experience in business development or a combination of relevant training and experience. Program management and technical sales experience are an asset.
